A Small Flat Rock

When taking a small flat rock, to skip across the water,

if thrown just right, it dances atop the water,

three, four, five, four, five times…

Once I saw a stone skip seven times…

Sometimes it just goes, “Plunk!”

Yet… Always disappearing to the bottom of the pond.

Life is like that…

Autumn colors are vibrant this year.

There is transcendent beauty in their death,

because we know, green buds will bloom in Spring;

Their flowers, their seed pods, dropping to the earth,

reassuring us of continuing life.

Death is like that.

We greet the morning sun.

The birds are singing charmed choruses

at first light.

We step into the cool air,

into the warming morning light.

Clouds come into view,

the sky’s a brilliant blue.

Heaven is like that.
