As Long as You Believe

I’ve heard this or some variety of this far too often: “It doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you believe.” My thought is, then, “It doesn’t matter what you eat, as long as you eat.” Or, worse, “It doesn’t matter who you obey, as long as you obey.”

Think about it for a second…

Now, if you are having trouble mulling over those three sentences, I wouldn’t be surprised, because I myself often have difficulty thinking about some thing or some idea, or some event…

Looking around, it occurs to me that thinking has become a lost art.

We don’t know what to do with our own thoughts, let alone the thoughts of others…

Well, there is this thought from a man purported to be one of the wisest men ever:

How long will you gullible people love being so gullible? How long will you mockers find joy in your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge? — Proverbs 1:22, GOD’S WORD® Translation (GWT).

That verse is probably to be directed in the first question above.

This next verse corresponds to the second about what we eat.

However, solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to know the difference between good and evil. — Hebrews 5:14, GWT.

So, there is that for the first two, but leading to the third, is this verse:

Don’t you know that if you offer to be someone’s slave, you must obey that master? Either your master is sin, or your master is obedience. Letting sin be your master leads to death. Letting obedience be your master leads to God’s approval. — Romans 6:16, GWT.

Think about it. If it only matters that we believe and not what we believe, we become slaves to our own ignorance. If we don;t pay attention to what we eat, there are all kinds of disorders that can result -from a temporary belly ache to a serious condition requiring hospitalization. If we listen to and accept just any viewpoint, we will live under its auspices and suffer whatever consequences result — whether good consequences or bad.

I think that this all requires some serious thinking, because it just might determine our destiny — whether Earth bound or Heaven bound….
