Except for the dynamics of Corporate greed and for ever expanding profits, that single silo would never have developed.

Not to forget, Henry Ford is the best exsample I can think of off the top of my head,even though yes he certainly had a profit motive, but he also figured out that if he paid his employees well enough to buy the product they were making - well that was a microeconomic decision that bode well for the rest of American Manufacturers.

Also, it seems to me that there was a contest about who could make the best and longest lasting products. Whereas today it's all about "Business Building" and to plan engineering contest that whenever the warranty expires the product craps the bed.
