It is my understanding that the chapters and verses aided significantly in copying the texts - which was a rather slow and tedious process. It turned out to be very helpful in referencing the Bible. The Greek texts had paragraphs in their structure. For translators the syntax of the Greek language is significantly different than English and we all should appreciate the linguists for their diligent and expert work.
