Liked your essay... i've been a suburban backyard gardener for 30 or 40 years. - flowers and veggies. The veggie gardeden is about 40'x40' with a few peppers mixed in the flower gardens. I never expected it to be more than supplement, never a substitute. Years ago I read what someone boasted on FB, how glad they were that they could supply all their own food needs, in their backyard, since she knew how to garden. So, I double checked, what I believed I already knew (family history). Finding a book which title tells it all, "Forty Acres and Indipendence," confirmed that I would need 1,000 times more space to gain our family's food independence... just sayin'.
