There are many misunderstandings of the Bible and this one, I think, came out of the Dark Ages, that is the picture of Hell. The parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16:19-31) draws a most accurate picture. You are closer than you realize to understanding the character of God in that you have in your mind an awful picture which also came out of the Dark Ages and not the Bible. The Final Judgment's eternal fire seems to me to be the only way to destroy anything that God has made, Human or Angelic, but it is not infinite torture but puts them out of their misery eternally.
