Women’s Liberation

I found an interesting idea in a recent word study about the phrase in Colossians 3:18 — “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” — Perean Standard Bible.

So, wha tactually is fitting in the Lord?

Most translations use that same word, “submit” which has caused quite a stir in this era of the independent woman. But it has been misunderstood just as much as “dominion”’ has from the Genesis’ Story of Creation. It has been misconstrued in this way: “Dominion” has been perverted to give license for “domination.”

Likewise, “submit” has been twisted to mean “become enslaved.”

However, that makes absolutely no sense when kept in the context of ensuing verses, and I think it has been an acceptable viewpoint of men when they have to bolster their sense of false pride…

“Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.” — Colossians 3:19–21, NIV.

Can you see the balance?

Also, that macho mindset does not conform to other Bible verses like “the God of all comfort” and “there is neither male nor female, but all are one in Christ.”

Now let me refer to Strong’s Lexicon.

“Derived from the verb ὑποτάσσω (hupotassō), meaning “to arrange under.”

“It implies a voluntary yielding or arranging oneself under the authority or leadership of another.”

“…a spiritual or relational submission, such as the believer’s submission to God, or the orderly structure within the church and family.”

“.The idea of submission was not seen as demeaning but as a necessary component of order and harmony. In the early Christian context, submission was redefined through the lens of Christ’s example, emphasizing humility, love, and mutual respect.” — https://biblehub.com/greek/5293.htm

Please notice at the end of the Colossians chapter this little phrase: “and there is no favoritism.” — verse 25.

In addition, from some of my earlier word studies , I noted that Adam got the curse — the promise of a tough life — while Eve got the blessing — the promise her progeny would give birth to the Messiah.

So, I see as part of this submission, women’s need to have a sympathetic eye and a merciful understanding of the load men have to carry. I’ll note here that this understanding becomes reciprocal in light of women’s increased difficulty in childbirth…not for nothing.

In conclusion, by turning to Jesus there is a way provided to escape twisted mindsets to a new understanding of what God’s perfect will for Humanity actually has been all along.

Finally, I’ve got to say that women’s movements can be in the right, but always become disruptive and counterproductive, and that, only because their methodology excludes God, Jesus, and the Bible.

To my point, Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” — John 10:10, NIV.

So, why not include Him in your cause?

Just wondering.

After all is said and done, that remains to be your choice!

P.S. -

I have no idea what this song has to do with this essay, but I’ve always liked Janis Joplin: Janis Joplin-Mercedes Benz(original)
