Your essay is broader and more insightful than whatever I might add, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway:
Leaving the Agrarian culture and its supporting structure of Family Farms, the maternal/paternal structures replaced it. Together with farming's self- reliance and rural/neighborly cooperatives, the new paradigm put people into the isolation chambers of the industrial world where individuals must compete for jobs and wages... hardly the setting for neighborliness or cooperative progressions. or pargamic thinking.
